"I hope that Muckross will be made a real garden of friendship, and that it will be the greatest playground in the world - there is not another in the world like it and I know them all." Muckross House is a magnificent Victorian mansion and is one of the main stately homes in Ireland. Presented to the State in 1932, Muckross House and gardens form the nucleus of the National Park. A tour through the house has passed many a rainy day, giving the visitor a remarkable insight into the lives of the landed Gentry and their servants. This is one of Ireland's top visitor attractions and the entire Muckross complex puts through about 250,000 visitors a year. It also has a top class no-nonsense restaurant which is probably its only remaining secret. Get there about 12:30, as after that it gets crowded. The gardens are famous worldwide for their beauty. Have a look at our interactive panorama. The gardens are beautiful throughout the year, but are particularly so in May/June when the Rhododendron, Azalea and Camellia are in full bloom. A visit here is an absolute must and is the starting point for many of the best walks.
