It is reckoned that Dinis Cottage was build between 1801 and 1812. It was build on the site of an even older cottage. Some of the graffiti etched on the windows of Dinis Cottage dates back to the 1820's. The earliest is dated 1812. Little has changed since then and it is well worth stopping here for tea and scones to ponder on the newly-weds who, over 180 years ago, carved their names, for luck, on the glass windows with their new diamond wedding ring.
All three lakes meet in the pool at the bottom of the photo (also, take a look at our immersive panorama taken from behind Dinis Cottage). Thousands have thrilled at the fun of shooting the rapids under "The Old Weir Bridge". For more details on this go to our Gap of Dunloe Tour page.
It is just a mile from the car park on the main road and is a beautiful walk through an oak wood on the edge of Muckross Lake. Because of the shadows cast by Torc Mountain, we would suggest the morning as the best time for photos.
Dinis Cottage has been carefully restored in recent years and now is totally environmentally-friendly and runs on solar power. Even the brown bread tastes good!
