The Red Deer in Killarney are the only herd which has a continuous existence since Red Deer arrived back into Ireland following the last Ice Age. There are two groupings, lowland and upland. These are lowland. They are best seen at dawn or dusk when they move to the lakes for water. They are relatively harmless for their size except during the rutting season, in October. Having said that, be careful as these are wild animals, do not even look like "Bambi" and even deer can have a bad day.More common are the Sika deer who are smaller and have a white rump. They were introduced in 1865 and now number about 700.
