Built on the shores of Lough Leane, Ross Castle dates back to the 1400's. While it is now enjoying its retirement, this was always a working castle. It was the scene of many bitter battles through the ages and, together with McCarthy Mórs castle just a few miles away, was the last castle in Ireland to surrender to Cromwell in 1652 when he fulfilled an ancient prophecy and attacked it from the lake. The castle has been extensively restored and is open to the public. From the pier, boats leave regularly for Innisfallen Island. A return trip costs about €7-8.
