We can actually compare present day Killarney with how it looked during Victorian times thanks to the work of two early photographers, William Laurence and Louis Anthony. Both worked extensively in the Killarney area between 1890 and 1920, attracted by the influx of visitors from England. Their framed photographs were very much sought after, as photography would have been the new technology of that time. |

These early photographs, particularly The Laurence Collection, are in the care of the Trustees of The National Photographic Archives in Dublin, who have kindly allowed us to use them on this site. All of these old photos (and many more besides) are available for purchase from The National Photographic Archives at www.nli.ie. The archives themselves can be viewed at the NLI building at Meeting House Square in the Temple Bar. Its well worth a visit. These photographs now constitute a powerful visual diary of Killarney in the late Victorian era. To compare Killarney now and then, simply move your mouse over the photo.
